Design
Dell Studio 1737 is an easy system to spot since its fairly large, measuring 15.4-by-11.4-by-1.4 inches (HWD) and weighing 7.5 pounds. Its the type of system youll want anchored to your desk, though, replacing your old desktop. The HP Pavilion dv7 (2173cl) and dv7-2170us are each only two-tenths of a pound lighter (7.3 lbs) and take up just as much space. If the lightest 17-inch laptop is what youre after, Apple is the only one that offers it in theMacBook Pro 17-inch (Unibody). The 1737s looks are simple, and has a common theme seen in most Dell laptops: You get to pick from a crop of colors or personalize your own from over 200 designs, though Staples only has a select few in stock. This configuration is draped in Midnight Blue, which is otherwise a $40 option through Dells Web site.




The 17-inch widscreen is the Dell Studio 1737 most prized feature, as it enriches the movie experience and allows you to work with multiple windows—while keeping eye strain down to a minimum. At this price, though, you so have to understand what youre missing. While its perfectly acceptable to use the aging 16-by-10 screen aspect ratio, the dv7 (2173cl) and HP HDX18t have already transitioned to 16-by-9 screens, which share a common resolution with consumer HDTVs. The Dell Studio 1737 has a 1,440-by-900 resolution, but is dwarfed by the 1600-by-900 and the 1,920-by-1,080 resolutions found in the dv7 (2173cl) and dv7 (2170us), respectively. At $750, though, a baseline resolution is an acceptable concession. Alternatively, Dells Web site offers better screens (RGB option) and a higher resolution (1,920-by-1,200), but youll have to buy it there.

The Dell Studio 1569 15.6-inch, 1366x768 screen provided sharp images, accurate colors, and smooth playback of every video we threw at it, from a 720p episode of Fringe to a DVD of the movie Dark City to a 1080p WMV file from the Microsoft HD showcase. However, while viewing angles were decent when we were just staring at the bright desktop, colors washed out at even 45 degrees to the right or left when we were watching movies with dark scenes.


You can definitely use the Studio 15z as a stereo. Both when streaming a jazz tune and a heavy metal tune from Napster.com, the speakers produced accurate sound that was loud enough to fill a large living room.

The Dell Studio 1537 is great for a home laptop

I got this computer last year after I had another Dell laptop stolen from a break in. This is much better because it has more memory. 320gigs.

You were able to chose the design on the cover. I chose the burnt orange which was really nice. I like the feel of it. It is quite heavy though. Mind you I dont really move it around or lug it around, so it doesnt bother me at all.

The colors are very vibrant. The picture is really clear. Especially after installing Windows 7.

Dell Studio 17 1749 is a 3.5kg, 17in laptop with a Core i5-based CPU and plenty of built-in features. Its a laptop thats designed for users who want an affordable desktop replacement, media centre or gaming PC. There are some things about it that wed change — wed make its panels less glossy, and wed also make its keyboard a little more solid. But overall it is a very good all-round notebook.



Dell Studio 17 1749 laptop: Specifications and performance
The Dell Studio 1749s specifications are solid; not only do you get a fast 2.53GHz Intel Core i5-540M CPU, it also includes 4GB of DDR3 SDRAM, an ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics adapter and — most impressively — it has two 500GB, 7200rpm hard drives. The hard drives arent installed in a RAID array, instead they are separate drives so that you can use one for the operating system and applications and the other for your data. The system drive averaged a very quick 36.27 megabytes per second (MBps) in our transfer tests, so the overall performance of the Dell Studio 1749 will be relatively swift in applications that require data to be duplicated, such as file compression. However, it still wasnt as fast as the hard drive in the Dell Inspiron M501R quad-core notebook , which averaged 40MBps.

In our Blender 3D rendering tests, the Dell Studio 17 1749 averaged a time of 55sec, which is faster than the 60sec achieved by the 2.26GHz, Intel Core i5-430M-based Dell Inspiron 15R N5010 notebook, but nevertheless this result was a little slower than what we expected. For example, the Dell Vostro 3700 notebook and the Samaung R580 notebook, both of which use the 2.4GHz Intel Core i5-520M CPU, also recorded 55sec in the same test; the faster processing speed in the Studio 17 1749 didn’t translate into quicker rendering times in the Blender test.

In our DVD encoding test, in which we use AutoGordianKnot to encode a DVD file to a 1.5GB Xvid file, the Studio 17 1749 recorded a time of 1hr 4min, which is 6min faster than what the Dell Inspiron 15R N5010 recorded, and 1min faster than result recorded in our tests by the Core i7-620M-based Fujitsu LifeBook E780 notebook. The overall combination of the fast CPU and hard drive really helped the Dell Studio 17 1749 to shine in this encoding test.

The Studio 17/1749s graphics performance is also very good, and this was highlighted in the 3DMark06 test, in which the 1GB ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650 graphics adapter recorded 7534. You will definitely be able to play many of the latest games on this laptop, although some might require you to use medium or low quality graphics details.

The Studio 17 is a 17-inch multimedia and gaming desktop-replacement notebook from Dell. This system can be configured with Intel Core i7 processors as well as high-end ATI Mobility Radeon graphics cards to compete against powerhouse systems like the Acer Aspire 8940G or Asus G51J. Dell has one trick up its sleeve with the Studio 17: it’s the first large consumer notebook to offer an optional multitouch display.



Attentive readers might notice that we already reviewed the Dell Studio 17 last year. However, this isn’t the same Studio 17. The system we’re reviewing here is the new Studio 17 (1747) which uses a completely new chassis with 16:9 ratio widescreen display, new speakers, and support for the latest processors.

PerformanceThe dollar savings on the Dell studio 1737 are also reflected in its performance parts: It runs a 2.1GHz Intel Core 2 Duo T6500 processor. While its fast enough for the majority of multimedia tasks, the dv7 (2173cl) and dv7 (2170us) run faster and more energy efficient Intel processors—at least on paper. Though you wont even notice the CPUs speed differences in the real-world scenarios, the 1737 beat the dv7 (2173cl) in video encoding and Cinebench R10 tests. It also helped that the Dell studio 1737 included 4GB of memory. Gaming and 3D scenarios, however, fell short against its rivals. Its Intel integrated graphics was simply no match for the midrange ATI graphics cards found in the dv7 (2173cl) and dv7 (2170us)—another reason why its a cheaper system. That said, the Dell studio 1737 is not a powerhouse gaming system or even a moderate one for that matter.


A less burdensome graphics subsystem translates to better battery life. Even though this configuration uses a 56Wh battery, it outlasted the dv7 (2173) and the dv7 (2170us) and their bigger 73Wh batteries by a handful of minutes. (The Dell studio 1737 scored 3 hours, 37 minutes in Bapcos MobileMark 2007 tests). A bigger 85Wh battery ($45) is available through Dells Web site only and can easily get you into the 4- to 5-hour range.

The Dell Studio 1737 (s1737-USE0145) is not the powerhouse everyone expects from a laptop that takes up a considerable amount of desk space. Although it has the dimensions to accommodate scorching parts, this particular configuration is targeted as a value proposition for big-screen lovers. You dont get the high-end 3D graphics or a thoroughbred processor. For $750, though, most frugal shoppers can look past those parts and reap the benefits of its features and the gorgeous 17-inch widescreen.
